If you’ve followed our guide to Root the HTC Incredible, then you’ve probably found your way here, to download and install Wireless Tether for Root Users for your HTC Droid Incredible. If you haven’t rooted your Incredible or don’t know what to do to get it rooted, please follow the guide to Root the HTC Droid Incredible.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s start talking about Wireless Tether for Root Users, shall we?

First off, you’ll need to download fw_bcm4329, then extract the contents to your desktop, so once finished, you’ll have a fw_bcm4329.bin file sitting on your desktop.

Next, you need to connect your phone to your computer using provided USB cable, and mount the SD card.

Once you mount the SD card, it should show up on your list of drives on your computer. Go into the root of the SD card (simply by clicking the name of the drive associated with the SD card) and create a folder named android.tether

Copy the fw_bcm4329.bin file into that folder you just created.

Now, disconnect your USB cord. Then install “Wireless Tether for Root Users” from the Android Marketplace, and enjoy tethering!

This guide explains how to root the HTC Incredible, also known as the Droid Incredible and the HTC Droid Incredible. The goal we’re going to achieve today is to enable you to be able to use cool apps such as wireless tether, and enable you to perform even more cool modifications that you wouldn’t normally be able to do. This process was not discovered or created by us, we’re just simply giving you a user-friendly guide that will make rooting your HTC Incredible easier.

Section 1

First, you’ll need to download the Android SDK, and install it in the C:\ drive on your computer. Once installed, we’d like you to rename that folder from android-sdk-windows to android. This will make things easier when you need to do certain things in a command prompt, which you’ll see later on.

Next, you’ll need to download five files, and place them all inside of your C:\android\tools folder:

Download ota;
Download Superuser;
Download payload-update;
Download busybox; and,
Download su.

Now, for the final 2 downloads, you will need to extract the contents of those ZIP files, and place the one file, not folder that is inside of the ZIP, into the C:\android\tools folder. So, your tools folder should have the following items inside of it (plus everything that installed):

C:\android\tools\su
C:\android\tools\busybox
C:\android\tools\Superuser.apk
C:\android\tools\ota.zip
C:\android\tools\payload-update.zip

Section 2

Method 1

Plug your phone into your computer using the USB cable that came with it.

Now, you’ll need to open a command prompt. The easiest way to do this is (on a Windows machine) click Start, then click Run. Type in cmd, which will bring up a black window.

In that command prompt, you will enter the following commands, one per line as shown below:

cd C:\android\tools
edit loop.bat

In that, type:

@echo off
:TOP
adb shell
GOTO TOP

Now, Press Alt-F, then X. Then press Enter for ‘yes’.

Back inside the command prompt, enter this command:

loop

Your screen should then fill up with “Error – Device Not Found” messages. Now, remove the USB cord, press and hold the optical trackball, and press the power key. Release the optical trackball now. Once in that menu, press the power key again, then wait 20 seconds for the phone to do its thing.

Plug the phone back into the computer and wait 10 seconds for the computer to recognize the phone again.

Press menu down to highlight Recovery. Then press the power button, and wait 20 seconds.

Now, the screen should change from “Error – Device Not Found” to “exec ‘/system/bin/sh’ failed – no such file or directory (2) -”

Note: If you do not get this message, within 30 seconds, pull the battery and do the process over again. Do not continue until you are successful in getting this message.

Once you get the message noted above, go to the command prompt, press CTRL-C to stop the batch file from running. If that works, skip the next 2 methods, and continue with Section 3.

Method 2

Turn your phone off, then plug it into the USB on your computer. In the command prompt, type the following command:

loop

The screen should fill up with “Error – Device Not Found”.

Press and hold the Volume Down button, and press and hold the Power button.

Once you get into that menu, press the Volume Down button to highlight Recovery.

Press the Power button.

The screen should now change from “Error – Device Not Found” to “exec ‘/system/bin/sh’ failed – no such file or directory (2) -”

Note: If you do not get this message, within 30 seconds, pull the battery and do the process over again. Do not continue until you are successful in getting this message.

If this does not work after a couple tries, please give Method 1 another shot. If neither of these methods end up working for you, please let us know so we can bring some more methods to the table.

Section 3

As of now, your screen should have a triangle with a ! symbol inside of it. Press the Volume Up key and go back to the main menu, but DO NOT REBOOT THE PHONE!

Press Volume Down to highlight ‘apply: update.zip” and press the Power button to select it. Note: it WILL fail at this. Everything is OK.

Go back to the command prompt and enter the following commands, one per line:

adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
adb push ota.zip /sdcard/update.zip
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk

Now, type in this next command, but DO NOT PRES ENTER YET!

adb push payload-update.zip /sdcard/update.zip

Now, press the Power button on the menu option to “apply: update.zip”. When you press the Power button, wait 1 – 2 seconds, then go to command prompt and hit Enter on the command you just entered.

If successful, you should see “UnrEVOked for Incredible” and more.
If unsuccessful, please go back to the beginning of Section 3 and repeat the steps. This was why you were urged to read the whole guide before proceeding!

Now, your next command prompt entries will make this root access permanent when you reboot your phone. It is imperative you complete this step! Enter the following commands, one per line as shown:

adb shell
su

export PATH=$PATH:/system/bin

cd /system/app
cat /sdcard/Superuser.apk > Superuser.apk

cd /system/bin
cat /sdcard/su > su

ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su //Note: if you get an error here, enter the command rm /system/xbin/su and redo this command.

chmod 06755 su

Congratulations! You now have HTC Incredible root access! Follow the Wireless Tether for HTC Incredible guide if you want to test out your newly rooted HTC Incredible now!
