We just came across a new version of Swype for HTC Evo, and we figured we would share it with you! Make sure you have any previous versions uninstalled first, then you can install this in any of the following ways:

Install Swype Using ADB

1. Open a command prompt. In that command prompt, change directory to your Android SDK tools directory.
2. We’ll be installing the Swype through ADB, so copy or move the Swype APK you just downloaded, into the tools directory.
3. Now, enter the following commands, one per line:

adb install Swype_1.60.36.8214_WVGA.apk

4. This will push the APK file to your phone and install it. It should say the install was successful.
5. Go to Menu – Settings – Keyboard and Input and place a check mark inside the box next to Swype. Accept the notice. It’s standard with all text input applications.
6. Open up any text input field, and long-press on the field. It will being up a text input query, where you select Swype as your keyboard.
7. Happy Swyping!

Install Via Astro File Manager

1. Download the file and push it to your SD card.
2. Download Astro File Manager (it’s free) from the Market.
3. Open Astro, and navigate to your SD card where you will long press the Swype file to install.
4. Go to Menu – Settings – Keyboard and Input and place a check mark inside the box next to Swype. Accept the notice. It’s standard with all text input applications.
5. Open up any text input field, and long-pres on the field. It will bring up a text input query, where you select Swype as your keyboard.
6. Happy Swyping!

Install Via Gmail – NEW!

1. Download the file and email to your Gmail address associated with your phone.
2. When you receive the email, open it. There will be an ‘Install’ button next to the attachment.
3. Install the application.
4. Go to Menu – Settings – Keyboard and Input and place a check mark inside the box next to Swype. Accept the notice. It’s standard with all text input applications.
5. Open up any text input field, and long-press on the field. It will being up a text input query, where you select Swype as your keyboard.
6. Happy Swyping!

We’ve had some issues in the past with getting a version of Swype that actually worked for you all, but here are some files which you can use that will work for your phones and not give you any problems. First, you will need to get rid of any current Swype you have already installed on your phone. Then, below, you can choose the version of Swype for you and install it to your phone, either using a file manager or using ADB commands.

SwiftKey is a new application that’s been being developed over the past couple years and has finally reached a beta stage, open for all Android users to check out and use! Here’s some information directly from their site where you can download it:

Run the installation file, which will ask you to grant the required permissions for our app to run. Please note, if you have previously installed an alpha version of SwiftKey, uninstall it before proceeding.

Once the main files are installed on to the phone, you need to follow some further steps to enable SwiftKey and replace your current text entry method. Running SwiftKey from the phone’s main menu will fire up our wizard, which guides you through those stages:

1) Enable SwiftKey in the settings menu
In our wizard, select next to see instructions on how to enable SwiftKey as an input method on your phone. Pressing ‘Enable’ then loads up the ‘Language and Keyboard’ menu, where you need to locate ‘SwiftKey Beta’ and check the box to the right of it. Read the alert that displays and press ‘OK’ to continue, then press your phone’s back button to return to the wizard.

2) Select SwiftKey as your input method
The next stage involves selecting SwiftKey as your phone’s input method. Read the instructions then press ‘Select’ to bring up the input method menu. Press the radio button to the right of ‘SwiftKey Beta’ and then on the instructions page press ‘Next’ to continue.

3) Download a language module for SwiftKey
Now you need to download one of our language models to use with SwiftKey. Each module is approximately 3MB in size, so make sure you are connected to a WiFi network or have at least a 3G data plan on your phone before completing this step. When you are ready, press ‘Download’ and choose the language you would like to use, then press ‘OK’.

Once you have selected your Language Module, a warning comes up telling you the download may take a little while. Press OK and wait for the language module to download and unzip. A message on the screen indicates a successful download.

4) Let SwiftKey learn from your SMS archive
If you choose to, SwiftKey can learn your writing style by analysing past SMS messages stored on your phone. This process only takes a few seconds. Press ‘Learn’ to run it, or ‘Skip’ if you would not like to do it at this stage.

Congratulations! You now have SwiftKey up and running on your phone. Just start typing to enjoy unrivalled text prediction.

Should you wish to disable or re-enable SwiftKey at a later time, go to your phone’s Main Menu then press Settings -> Language and Keyboards (or Settings -> Locale and Text for Android 1.6 or earlier) and check/uncheck SwiftKey.

Instructions for installation:

1. You need to have a rooted CDMA HTC Hero. If you do not have a rooted CDMA HTC Hero, please do not proceed.
2. Download the HTC_IME.apk file above, then place it in the following directory:

C:\Android\tools

3. Once you download and move that file to the location above, connect your Hero to your computer using the USB cable. Then you will open a command prompt.
4. In that command prompt, please type in the path to your Android SDK tools directory. If you followed the guides here to root your phone, your path will be C:\Android\tools. So, enter the following commands into the command prompt, one per line. Do not enter anything in red, those are reference notes for you:

cd C:\Android\tools

adb devices  //this will let you know if your device shows up on your computer.

adb remount     //This remounts your /system/ in read-write mode

adb push HTC_IME.apk /system/app/   // This will push the Pink keyboard to your phone!

5. The final step will take anywhere from 2-10 seconds to complete, because the file is approx 4.8MB and the transfer speed seems to widely vary between computers/phones/USB cords.

Now, just open anywhere where you can input text. A good place is to just press the “Search” button on your phone, then press the text field for input. Your new keyboard will take about 10-20 seconds to load, but it will work!

Once installed, you need to set your phone to use Swype instead of the stock keyboard. Follow these simple instructions.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Press ‘Language and Keyboard’.
3. Check the box next to ‘Swype’. Accept the message that pops up.
4. Open any text input field. Quick way is to press the search button on your phone (if it’s a Google phone).
5. Long-press on the input box.
6. Select ‘Input Method’ from the popup.
7. Select ‘Swype’ from the choices given to you.
8. Swype away!

Swype is an innovative new way of typing on your Android phone. Instead of poking the screen hundreds of times to tap out a text message to someone, Swype your finger on the screen and in a lot less time, send that same message across to your buddy or friend or whoever!

Right now, the application doesn’t cost anything to install on your phone. You simply head to swype.com and register, and follow the easy instructions there to get it installed and working on your phone! That’s it!

So, people have been having trouble making Swype work on the HTC Evo. Something about the version of files on Android 2.1 on the Evo doesn’t allow Swype to work correctly, but the issue has been fixed, and we’re delighted to bring to you that information!

All you need to do is download and install the application to your phone! First, though, you need to make sure you have non-Market apps allowed to be installed on your Evo. To do this, go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications. Check “unknown sources.” Simple as that. Now for the download.

6/25/2010 - We’re currently looking for an operating version of Swype. If you have one, please send an email to us using the contact form so we can get it added to the website. Apparently all the versions that are available outside of swype.com are non-working at the moment. Please bear with us until we get this issue solved. Feel free to try any of the downloads below, but consider this a warning that they may not operate fully, or give you an ‘expired’ message. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience.

Note: The following 2 downloads may not work with your Evo. Please make sure you uninstall any previous version before installing one from this site. This will ensure you don’t get errors.

You may want to come to this site on your Evo so you can get the download straight to your phone. If you don’t want to do that, download the Swype APK here and install it using ADB.

If the above version does not work, please download this version of the Swype APK and install it AFTER you have uninstalled the version above.

QUICK SWYPE FAQ:
Q: How do I add a word to the dictionary?
A: Tap the word out like a normal keyboard, then either a) just hit space, or b) press the Swype key.

Q: How do I remove a word from the dictionary?
A: Select and highlight ONLY the word that you wish to remove and press the Swype key. Follow the prompt to remove the word.

Q: How do I easily move the cursor location like the arrows on the HTC keyboard?
A: Drag your finger from the Swype key to the SYM key right next to it to get the interface with arrows to pop up.

Note: On 06/20/2010 a new version of Swype was uploaded using the same download link as before. Please re-download and reinstall, mainly if you’ve gotten a “Trial Period Has Ended” notice when trying to use Swype. Thanks!
