CyanogenMod has finally reached a stage where it can be called a Release Candidate. A Release Candidate is basically one step away from a final release, because there may possibly still be some bugs to work out. We’re proud to bring to you the work of the Android community, and give you an explanation of how to flash and use CyanogenMod 6!

First, you’ll need to download the following file, which is CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC1: update-cm-6.0.0-Heroc-RC1-signed

Then, optionally, you can go to the CyanogenMod 6.0.0- RC1 – Google Apps page to get the Google Apps ZIP.

Now, to flash this ROM, you first need to be rooted. If you haven’t rooted your phone yet, then go follow the guide called How to Root the HTC Hero, which will open in a new window so you don’t lose your place here.

Once you’ve rooted your phone, or if you’ve already done that, then you need to make a backup of your current setup on your phone, just in case anything goes wrong while flashing this ROM. This is general rule of thumb when flashing ROMs to your phone, always make a backup. If you don’t know how to do that, then follow this guide: Making a Nandroid Backup.

Now that all the prep work is done, you can get ready to flash this ROM to your phone! Follow the procedure below to flash it:

1. You should have at least one downloaded file on your desktop, named update-cm-6.0.0-Heroc-RC1-signed.zip. You may also have the Google Apps ZIP, gapps-mdpi-20100814-signed.zip. Place these files onto your SD Card, not inside of any folder. You can do this by plugging your phone in to your computer, sliding down the notification bar, and selecting “Select to copy files to/from your computer” which will make your SD card show up as an extra drive on your system.
2. Once you have the files on your phone, and your nandroid backup is completed, reboot into recovery by first powering down, then press and hold Home and Power at the same time until your recovery menu appears.
3. Once in recovery, select the option to Wipe.
4. In that menu, to be safe, wipe Dalvik-Cache, data/factory reset, and return tot he main menu of recovery.
5. Now, select apply ZIP from SDCard.
6. Select the update-cm-6.0.0-Heroc-RC1-signed.zip and apply it. Press Home to confirm.
7. Wait a while for the update, which is your new ROM, to flash itself. When finished, reboot the phone into normal mode.
8. After waiting a couple minutes, if you want the Google Apps, then follow the steps above from #2 to #7.

Congratulations on ditching slow, laggy HTC Sense and going with a ROM that will completely surprise you in terms of speed, stability and features, as well as customization options!

If you’re using the Gallery app, if you go into the Camera app, it will freeze the phone.
Only red, white, and green work for the LED notifications colors in CM Settings. They will remove the other colors from our Menus soon.

Now whether you like it or not CyanogenMod 6 completely removes HTC’s Sense Home and Sense Widgets. This may make some people feel left out in the dark when trying to figure out what to use. This article will guide you through choosing a suitable home replacement and widgets to give you a look that you can love.

When choosing a home replacement app you need to decide whether you want to mimic a look or create your own. If you are looking to create your own look then LauncherPro is for you. LauncherPro was put on the Android Market on May 17th, 2010. It has grown from being a completly free app, to having Sense widgets that you can unlock with LauncherPro Plus which can be bought for the low cost of $2.99. LauncherPro can create a Sense like look for your phone, while not bogging down performance. This personally is the best home replacement app I have found. With up to 7 customizable screens and 3 customizable docks, it allows for tons of room for the average up to the most advanced user to customize. Tons of settings allow you to tweak the performance and animation settings too. With a fully animated app drawer and homescreens, LauncherPro gives the real “Sense” feel. You’ll see some screenshots of this application later on in the article!

The second home replacement app is AHome. AHome allows for tons of customization, which is what android users are all about right? With a nice size theme library and the ability to create your own AHome can give users a look that suits there everyday life. The real downside to AHome is the cost, with the original app costing $4.99 and some themes costing $0.99. This is enough to shy people away from using this home replacement. I recommend giving it a shot and if you dont like it return it for a refund.

Widgets are a more complex category because there are so many out there to choose from so i will outline a couple of good widgets that will replace the basic Sense Widgets.

The first widget I would like to show is Beautiful Widgets. It really is what it says. Beautiful Widgets will replace the clock and weather animations on CyanogenMod 6. They also include some toggle widgets to make it easier to toggle brightness, WI-FI and many others. It comes with two different size weather widgets one that is a 1×4, and one that is 2×4, and both look amazing. Besides being very functional, the clock and weather are customizable with tons of skins to make it look amazing, at the low price of ~ $2.00!

The other widgets I would like to show you are packaged with LauncherPro Plus. This little pack of widgets are amazing replacements for the Sense widgets. LauncherPro Plus comes with a calendar widget, SMS widget, bookmarks widget, and a people widget. All of these widgets are flawless and look amazing. The only downfall (really, downfall??) is that you will need to use LauncherPro and buy LauncherPro Plus for $2.99 in order to use them.

This guide explains how to enable Sprint Visual Voicemail for CyanogenMod 6. If you’re one of the many people who miss Sprint Visual Voicemail on your HTC Hero, then just follow the simple steps below and get it back!

1. First, you’ll need to download the Sprint_VVM and place it inside your Android SDK directory. Ours is C:\Android\tools, so that’s the instructions we will give.
2. Use one of the following installation methods:
   • Via Email – Send this APK to yourself in an email to the GMail account attached to your phone. Open the email on your phone, and press Install.
   • Via ADB – Place the Sprint_VVM.apk inside your C:\Android\tools folder. Open up a command prompt, and type the following commands, one per line:
     

     cd C:\Android\tools
     adb install Sprint_VVM.apk

   • Via File Manager – Place the APK onto your SD Card, and open a file manager on your Hero, such as Astro FIle Manager, and install the application from your SD Card that way.
3. Open Settings, select Call Settings, select Voicemail Settings, then select Voicemail Number.
4. Change the *86 to your phone number, then press “OK”.

Note: This will get your Voicemail working, but you will receive text messages from 9016, becuase those are required for the Voicemail to work.

To hide the 9016 text messages, you can download Handcent SMS from the Market, and long-press the thread that has been created from the text messages from that number. In the menu that opens, you can blacklist the number, so your phone will still receive the texts but not show them. This method may work with other messaging apps, but hasn’t been tested. So, if you find out this will work with a different messaging app, please let us know so we can add it to our guide!

The Voicemail app also comes with a widget you can use, if you desire.

Note: Handcent may still show an unread message every now and then. Just open the app, press “Menu” then “Mark All As Read”, which will make the notification go away!

It was announced this evening that CyanogenMod 6 will be becoming and actual Release Candidate soon, meaning the development of CyanogenMod 6 has become stable enough to be used as an everyday ROM. This is excellent news for the HTC Hero community, because it’s taken a short while now to finally stabilize everything enough to go from ‘Experimental’ to ‘Release Candidate’ status! If I am not mistaken the nightly builds will still continue, so if you want to continue to keep up to date with the absolute most recent builds of CyanogenMod 6 for HTC Hero, then just head on over to the Nightly Builds of CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental page now!

Frequently Asked Questions about CyanogenMod 6

Q: How do I flash CyanogenMod?
A: First, you need to be rooted. If you’re not rooted, follow the guide about How to Root the HTC Hero, then you can follow the instructions written on the CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental page.

Q: What is a ‘Google Shit’? / What are ‘Google Shits”?
A: A “Google Shit” is an application from Google, such as Google Voice, Google Maps, Google Latitude and much more. These applications, as a group, have been coined the name “Google Shits” or “Googleshits” by someone who apparently didn’t feel like typing the word ‘application’.

Q: Can we get Flash Player?
A: Currently, a full version of Flash Player will not work on our Heroes. It has to be compiled from the ground up, so until someone takes the time to do that, we don’t currently have support for a full version of Flash.

Q: Can we get HTC Sense?
A: CyanogenMod 6 was built from Android Source, which does not include HTC Sense at all. So, Sense being included in CyanogenMod 6 will probably never be an option, simply because it would take a complete rebuild from scratch, again. Besides, Sprint said that our HTC Hero phones would not be capable of running a Froyo build and the developers of CyanogenMod 6 have completely proven them WRONG!

Q: What is AOSP?
A: AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. AOSP does not include HTC Sense, Google applications, or anything like that. An AOSP build, such as CyanogenMod 6, was built with the Android’s actual intention in mind, which is a clean, fast, efficient operating system that runs beautifully on our Android phones.

Q: How do I use wireless tether on CyanogenMod?
A: In order to use wireless tether on your phone, you will need to have your phone rooted (which you obviously do already, because you are reading an FAQ on CyanogenMod 6). You will then need to go into the app market and download the latest version of WI-FI Tether for Root Users. It is the one with the WI-FI logo by it. Once this is done downloading and installing, start the app. It will configure some files and ask for superuser permissions. Then all you have to do is press the WI-FI symbol to start and connect on your device ex. laptop, other phones, etc.

Q: How do I get Sprint Visual Voicemail back after I flash CyanogenMod 6?

So, you’ve installed CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental, and would like to know how to use all of the settings? Here’s an explanatory guide on all of the settings, and recommended values for optimal battery life.

To get to the CyanogenMod settings page, you’ll need to go to Menu – Settings – CyanogenMod Settings. Here’s the breakdown of each one:

Application Settings

• Allow Application Moving – you can allow yourself to move any application to external storage (SD Card)
• Install Location
  • Automatic: Device will choose where to install the application
  • Internal: All applications will be installed on internal storage
  • External: All applications will be installed on external storage (SD Card)

Input Settings

• Haptic Feedback Tweaks
  • Haptic Feedback Main – Checked enables a short vibration upon key press for the softkeys and certain UI interactions
  • Haptic Feedback Up – Checked enables a short vibration upon key release of a softkey press and certain UI interactions
  • Haptic Screen Items – Only able to choose if Haptic Feedback Up is selected. Will make a short vibration on screen selections.
  • Set Down Pattern – Change the feel of the vibration when you make a down motion with a virtual hardkey or UI interaction.
  • Set Up Pattern – Change the feel of the vibration when you make an up motion with a virtual hardkey or UI interaction.
  • Set Long-press Pattern – Change the feel of the vibration when you make a long-press motion with a virtual hardkey or UI interaction.
  • Set Keypad Tap Pattern – Change the feel of the vibration when you make a keypad tap on-screen.
• Long-press Home Settings
  • Show Recent Apps Title – Shows the title of recent apps when the Home hardkey is long-pressed
  • Number of Recent Apps – You can show 8, 12, or 15 recently used apps on your home screen when you long-press the Home key
  • Use Custom Application – You can specify if you would like to use a custom application when you long-press the home button.
  • Select Custom Application – Only enabled if you enable the above option to Use Custom Application
• Lockscreen Music Control – Displays music controls on the lockscreen if enabled.
• Always Display Music Control – If Lockscreen Music Control is enabled, this will always display music controls on lockscreen regardless of whether the music player is running or not.
• Trackball Wake – If enabled, pressing the trackball will wake the phone.
• Trackball Unlock – If enabled, pressing the trackball will unlock the phone.
• Menu Unlock – If enabled, pressing the menu button will unlock the phone.

Performance Settings

Warning! The options in here will change the performance of your system, potentially for the worse. They are included for experimentation and CyanogenMod team requests that you do not submit bug reports if you have changed any of these settings from the defaults. These settings may work to increase performance for some people and may cause instability for other people, so if you notice something not functioning correctly after modifying these settings, revert them to the defaults recorded below.

• Use JIT – Uses the Dalvik Just-In-Time Compiler if enabled. A reboot is required. Default is unchecked.
• Enable Surface Dithering – Enabling this makes everything look cleaner, with the effect of less performance. Default is checked.
• Lock Home in Memory – this will keep your home application (such as ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro or other home replacements) in memory so no task killers can kill this application. JIT users: this will not allow JIT to kill your home application. Default is unchecked.
• VM Heap Size – This sets the maximum amount of memory per VM heap. A VM heap is the maximum amount of memory an application is allowed to consume. If you’re having problems running one specific application, you may want to try increasing this size. Default is 16m.

User Interface

• Power Prompt – If enabled, the device will prompt you before powering off or rebooting.
• Render Effect – You can change what colors are used to draw the screen – potential battery savings
• Automatic Backlight – Tweak backlight settings and filtering here:
  • Light Sensor Filter
    • Enabled – Apply moving average filter to sensor data to reduce backlight adjustment flicker
    • Window Length – The filtered value is the average sensor value during this period.
    • Reset Threshold – Samples that deviate this much from the current average resets the filter.
    • Sample Interval – A low value can increase accuracy, but will use more CPU.
  • Light Levels
    • Use Custom – Enabling this allows you to use custom light levels.
    • Screen Dim Level – Brightness used to dim the screen.
    • Edit Other Levels – This section is very advanced in the lighting preferences for your device. Modify with caution!
    • Allow Light Decrease – Allows the lighting to decrease. Use hysteresis to reduce flickering.
    • Decrease Hysteresis – Select the amount your light is allowed to decrease.
• Status Bar – Tweak various status bar settings here:
  • Battery
    • Battery Percentage – Display remaining battery charge, as a percentage, over the battery icon in the taskbar. Counts down from 99 to 0. Does not show 100 when the battery is full.
    • Battery Percentage Color – Allows you to change the color of the battery percentage numbers in the taskbar. Select your color then press the circle in the middle once you’re done. Allow a few minutes for the change to take effect.
  • Clock
    • Show Clock – Allows you to choose to show the clock in the taskbar or not.
    • Clock Color – Allows you to change the color of the clock in the taskbar. Choose the color you want then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to select your color. Allow a few minutes for your change to take place.
    • Show AM/PM for 12-hour Clock – Allows you to toggle the AM/PM display next to your clock, when it is enabled.
  • dBm Signal Strength
    • Show dBm – Enabled, this setting shows your signal strength in -dBm, next to your signal bars.
    • dBm Color – Change the color of the text displaying the -dBm value in the taskbar. Choose your color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to select your color. Wait up to a few minutes for your change to take place.
• Date and Provider – Tweak date and provider settings here:
  • Date
    • Date Color – Choose the color that you want the date to display on the status bar, when you pull it down for notifications. Select your color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to confirm. Allow a couple minutes for the change to take place.
  • PLMN Carrier String
    • Display PLMN (Lockscreen) – Will display the name of your carrier on the lockscreen, if enabled.
    • Display PLMN (Status Bar) – Will display the name of your carrier on the status bar when you pull it down for notifications, if enabled.
    • Carrier PLMN label Color – Change the color of the carrier name on the status bar. Select your color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to apply your color. May take a couple minutes for the change to take place.
  • SPN Carrier String
    • Display SPN (Lockscreen) – Will display the carrier SPN string on the lockscreen, if enabled.
    • Display SPN (Status Bar) – Will display the carrier SPN on the status bar when you pull it down for notifications, if enabled.
    • Carrier SPN Label Color – Change the color of the carrier SPN on the status bar. Select yoru color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to apply your changes.
• Notifications Colors
  

  To set these colors, choose the setting you want to change below, then select your color from the color wheel that will open. Then press on the circle in the middle of the color wheel to apply your changes, which may take a couple minutes to show up.

  • Status Bar Notification Colors
    • Notifications Ticker Color – Set the color of the notifications ticker that scrolls on your status bar.
    • Notifications Count Color – Set the color of the notifications count.
    • No Notifications Color – Set the color of the “No Notifications” text.
    • Clear Notifications Label Color – Set the color of the “Clear” text inside the clear notifications button.
    • Ongoing Notifications Title Color – Set the color of ongoing notification text.
    • Latest Notifications Title Color – Set the color of the latest notification text.
  • Items Notifications
    • Items Title Color
    • Items Text Color
    • Items Time Color
  • Notification Bar
    • Custom Notification Bar – if enabled, you can change the color of the notification bar, but will lose background transparency.
    • Bar Color – If Custom Notification Bar is enabled, set the color that you want your notification bar to be. Select your color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to apply your change.
    • Custom Pulldown Bar – If enabled, you can change the color of the pulldown bar.
    • Pulldown Bar Color – If Custom Pulldown Bar is enabled, set the color that you want your notification bar to be. Select your color then press the circle in the middle of the color wheel to apply your change.
• Tweaks Extras
  • Reset UI Tweaks to Default – If all else fails and you don’t know what you messed up, hit this and it will revert everything to default in the settings menus.
  • Export Colors To XML – If you’re a themer, then you can export the current color profile to an XML file on your SDCard for easy reviewing!
  • Import Colors From XML – If you have a color profile you’d like to import to your phone, then use this option to import that file.
• Accelerometer Rotation
  • 90 Degrees – if you turn your phone 90 degrees, the screen will rotate into landscape if enabled.
  • 180 Degrees – If the phone is turned upside down, the screen will rotate 180 degrees, into another portrait view.
  • 270 Degrees – If the phone is rotated 270 degrees, the screen will rotate into landscape if enabled.
• Web View
  • Reflow After Pinch In – If enabled, this will reflow content immediately after pinch to zoom in.
• Screen Lock Settings
  • Screen Timeout Delay – Length of time, from the beginning of inactivity, until the screen times out.
  • Screen Turned Off Delay – Length of time until the screen turns off, after timing out.

Here we will keep you updated with all of the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental. This build is created each night containing the progress of the ROM, with any fixes and patches as well as new features applied with each new release. Unfortunately we aren’t able to provide a changelog because what might work for us may not work for you. If you’re already using a CyanogenMod 6.0.0 ROM, just flash this over what you already have. If you’re coming from a Sense ROM, you’ll want to wipe everything.

CyanogenMod for the CDMA HTC Hero is a ROM that was built from the ground up, leaving out the laggy HTC Sense and much more. If you’re a user who is sick of your HTC Hero lagging, being slow, or just plain unresponsive, then you should continue reading!

CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, meaning that it does not contain any Sprint applications, no HTC applications or user interfaces, and it was also designed to be extremely fast, efficient on your battery, and not sacrifice too much in the way of widgets and other things. AOSP means Android Open Source Project, which is basically the Android system without a user interface, which you’re probably not very used to since you’ve been using Sense from HTC for a while.

This ROM, created by Cyanogen and Team, is an AOSP ROM as mentioned above. The team has built this ROM specifically for our Sprint CDMA HTC Heroes, and with a size of approximately half of the stock ROM that comes with our phones, there is a lot of junk that was removed, code cleaned, and optimized to run a lot more efficiently, smoothly, without the cost of high battery drain.

Since its inception, there were a lot of bugs that were found, that have been fixed. For example, you can now enjoy your camera, wifi access, and much more. occasionally a new bug pops up, but that’s part of the cost of an Experimental Build. Any bugs that are found, if confirmed by others, will be fixed.

Now, if you’re interested in installing this ROM, you will need to root your Hero. If you’ve already rooted, still, please visit the guide on how to Root the HTC Hero to find out if there’s extra steps you need to take if you’re using the build that cannot be rooted.

Once you’ve visited that guide and have rooted your HTC Hero, you may now download the latest build of CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental by following this link: cyanogen_heroc-ota-eng.ameer.wlanfix

Once you download that, if you want the Google apps, such as Google Maps, Google Voice and more, then follow this link to get the Google Apps:

Now that you’ve downloaded those files, let’s get started!

Get these 2 files onto your SD card one of two ways: mount your SD card and drag and drop them onto your SD card, or if you want to format and partition your SD, use the instructions below. If you don’t want to partition your SD, skip steps 4 and 5 below.

1. First, you’ll want to back up anything on your phone that you want to keep. We’ll be wiping everything, so if you don’t back it up, don’t get mad when you lose it!
2. Once you’ve backed up everything you needed, go ahead and reboot your phone into recovery. Do this by turning your phone off, then press and hold Home and Power at the same time until the recovery menu opens.
3. Now, go into the Wipe menu, and wipe everything except battery stats unless you want to calibrate your battery.
4. Once you wipe everything, if you’d like to partition your SD card, do that now. I personally use 32MB for swap, 0 for EXT, and FAT32 remainder.
5. If your SD card was just formatted, go back to the main menu in recovery and enable USB-MS Toggle, and then drag and drop the 2 zip files you downloaded above onto your SD card.
6. Now, go to the option to Flash Zip from SDCard.
7. Select the ZIP file named cyanogen_heroc-ota-eng.ameer.wlanfix.zip, and flash it.
8. Once that is done, select the Google Apps zip you downloaded, and flash that as well.
9. When that is finished, reboot your phone into regular mode. You now have CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Experimental running on your phone!
